Xigang Elementary opened in April 1917 as a branch of Xiaolong Public School, the "Xigang Branch," with 75 students at founding. It became an independent school in 1920, was renamed Xigang Public School in 1921, Xigang National School in 1941, Tainan County Xigang Township Xigang Elementary School in 1968, and took its current name after the 2010 county-city merger. The school relocated to its current campus in 1977, added a kindergarten in 1986, special-education classes in 1995, and resource classes in 2008. It now serves about 517 students across 24 classes, making it the largest elementary school in Xigang District.
西港國小於大正6年（民國6年，1917年）4月開學，初為蕭瓏公學校之分校「西港仔分校」，創校時共75名學生。民國9年（1920年）獨立設校，定名「西港仔公學校」，民國10年（1921年）改稱「西港公學校」，民國30年（1941年）改稱「西港國民學校」，民國57年（1968年）改稱「臺南縣西港鄉西港國民小學」，2010年縣市合併後改為現名。學校於民國66年（1977年）遷至現址，1986年增設幼兒園，1995年增設特教班，2008年增設資源班。目前全校約517名學生、24班，是西港區規模最大的國小。
