A century of schooling by the Bazhang River.
Xiatan Elementary was established on April 24, 1921, during the Japanese colonial era, as Tainan Prefecture Xiatan Public School. The school marked its 90th anniversary with a commemorative issue in the early 2010s, and today runs an attached kindergarten alongside its elementary program. It is known locally for a strong food-and-agriculture literacy curriculum that draws on the government-supplied pork program in school lunches, as well as bilingual and English enrichment for middle-grade students and international exchange activities.

Rice country on the Bazhang River.
Xiatan Elementary sits in a classic farming settlement along the floodplain of the Bazhang River (八掌溪), in the southwest corner of Chiayi County's Chianan Plain. The school's food-agriculture curriculum is a direct reflection of the rice- and crop-farming life that has long defined its rural catchment, connecting classroom learning to the fields just outside the schoolyard.
