A community rebuilt, a culture carried forward.
Xiaolin Elementary School was founded in 1937, during the Japanese colonial era, at the original Xiaolin village site in the Nanzixian River valley. On August 9, 2009, during Typhoon Morakot, a landslide dammed a nearby river; when the resulting dammed lake broke through, the flood destroyed the original Xiaolin village and school, and approximately 491 residents were reported missing or deceased. Survivors were relocated, and the school was rebuilt at a new site called Wuli-pu, reopening to students in 2012. The original village site is now preserved as the Xiaolin Village Memorial Park. The Xiaolin community identifies as Taivoan, a Plains Indigenous group related to the Siraya; as members of the community themselves describe it, "as long as the culture remains, Xiaolin will remain" — a conviction the rebuilt school continues to carry forward.

🌾 Taivoan Cultural Continuity
The community identifies as Taivoan, and describes its outlook in its own words: "as long as the culture remains, Xiaolin will remain" — an ethos the school's programs continue to reflect.
A Taivoan community's own account.
The Xiaolin community identifies as Taivoan (a Siraya-related Plains Indigenous group, sometimes termed 大武壠族). Following the community's relocation after 2009, its own account of resilience — "as long as the culture remains, Xiaolin will remain" — continues to guide how the rebuilt school and community carry Taivoan identity forward.
