The "highest institute of learning."

Xianglin Elementary traces its origins to 1914, when it opened as "Alishan Ordinary Elementary School" for the children of Japanese settlers, later expanding with a higher-elementary division in 1916. The school was reorganized and renamed several times over the following decades — becoming "Alishan National School" in 1941, renamed again in December 1945, then "Xianglin National School" in May 1947, before settling on its current name in 1968. Enrollment peaked at over 400 students in the 1950s; today it is a very small, extremely remote mountain school, self-branded as Taiwan's "highest institute of learning" — a well-known pun on its 2,195-meter elevation.
