Wujiang Elementary opened in September 1960 as a branch campus of the historic Dongli Elementary School, becoming a fully independent school on September 11, 1969. It is one of several schools in Fuli Township — alongside Wanning and Xuetian Elementary — that trace their origins to Dongli, as growing farmland communities across the East Rift Valley needed schools of their own closer to home.
吳江國小於民國49年（1960年）9月以東里國小分校的形式成立，並於民國58年（1969年）9月11日正式獨立設校。這是富里鄉數所源自東里國小的學校之一，與萬寧國小、學田國小同樣如此——隨著花東縱谷各地農村社區的擴展，居民需要就近設立自己的學校。
