Started by villagers, before the government said yes.

Wenquan Elementary's origins go back to 1958, when local villagers pooled their own money to hire a teacher and set up a makeshift classroom — a full year before the government granted formal approval in 1959. The school became fully independent in 1962. Between 2004 and 2006 it was completely rebuilt as part of a county tourism-promotion campaign, and the campus now hosts a county "Interactive English Teaching Resource Center." The village's name, Wenquan, means "hot spring," reflecting the geothermal springs the area is known for.

♨️ Named for the Local Hot Springs

The village and school take their name, "Wenquan" (hot spring), directly from the geothermal springs that put the area on Taitung's tourism map, echoed in a full campus rebuild between 2004 and 2006.
