Wunei Elementary was established in April 1920 as a branch teaching site of Jiali Public School, based at Yongchang Hall. Permanent school buildings were built at its current location in 1921, and the school was named Wunzinei Public School. It was renamed Wunei National School in 1941 and took its current name in 1968. Today it remains a small rural school, with about 85 students across 8 classes — including two kindergarten classes — and 17 teachers.
塭內國小於大正9年（民國9年，1920年）4月設立，最初為佳里公學校之分教場，借用永昌宮上課。民國10年（1921年）於現址興建校舍，定名「塭子內公學校」，民國30年（1941年）改稱「塭內國民學校」，民國57年（1968年）改為現名。目前仍是規模小巧的鄉間學校，全校約85名學生、8班（含2班幼兒園），教師17人。

Like several of its neighboring Jiali schools, Wunei Elementary began as a branch teaching site meeting at a local hall before building its own permanent campus.

Wunei Elementary's name reflects the aquaculture-pond geography typical of Jiali's western, more coastal hamlets, where fish and shrimp farming have long shaped daily life. The wider district remains anchored by Jinluan Temple (金唐殿), one of the Tainan coastal plain's key Wangye "King Boat Festival" temples, and by Siraya Pingpu ancestor-spirit (阿立祖) worship traditions in surrounding hamlets.
