A tiny branch school reborn as a mixed-age pioneer.
Wenhe Experimental Elementary School began in 1965 as a branch of Chonghe Elementary School in Budai Village, becoming independent in 1976. In 2017, it was converted into an official "experimental school" (實驗小學) — the first school in Tainan to adopt mixed-age (混齡) instruction as its defining model. English is taught four periods a week starting in Grade 2, more than double the usual load elsewhere, with students grouped by proficiency across mixed-age classes, while core subjects such as Chinese, math, science, and social studies remain grade-based. Students, including kindergartners, are sorted into four "houses" — Lion (fire), Orca (ocean), Grizzly (earth), and Eagle (air) — each led by a teacher acting as a surrogate parent figure, a distinctive whole-school culture unique among Tainan's public schools. New buildings, funded by the Tainan City government, have since modernized the campus's safety and facilities.

New school buildings, funded by the Tainan City government, have modernized the campus's safety and facilities to match its innovative teaching model.
Innovation born from a shrinking village.
As a small, formerly branch-status rural school reinvented as an experimental model, Wenhe embodies how the depopulating farm villages around Guanmiao have had to innovate pedagogically to keep their schools viable — turning a small enrollment into an advantage through mixed-age classrooms and a distinctive house system. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
