The "Wanrong" school that isn't in Wanrong.
Here's a genuinely interesting quirk: despite carrying the name "Wanrong" (萬榮), this junior high is not physically located in Wanrong Township at all — it sits in Changqiao Village, Fenglin Township, a full township over. The name comes from the school's original mission: when it was founded in 1968, it served students from Wanrong Township's own Wanrong and Mingli villages alongside Fenglin's Changqiao and Senrong villages, so the founders named it for the more distant community it was reaching out to serve. Enrollment peaked at around 400 students across 9 classes in 1970, but has since shrunk considerably — to about 34 students in 3 classes by 2024 — with roughly 90% of today's students Indigenous, predominantly Truku.

🗺️ A Name From Across the Border
The school is physically in Fenglin Township, but takes its name from Wanrong Township next door — because it originally served students from both places at once.
🪶 A Mostly Truku Student Body
About 90% of today's students are Indigenous, predominantly Truku — reflecting the highland communities the school has long served on both sides of the township line.
📉 From 400 Students to 34
Enrollment peaked at roughly 400 students and 9 classes in 1970, but has fallen to about 34 students in 3 classes by 2024 — a stark marker of rural depopulation.
A highland border zone, Hakka and Truku together.
Wanrong Junior High sits in a highland border zone where Fenglin Township's Hakka farming heritage meets Indigenous, predominantly Truku, communities from both Fenglin and neighboring Wanrong Township. It's a small but telling example of how Taiwan's township borders don't always match the communities schools actually serve. See the Hualien county schools page for more on the region.
