A historic building at the heart of Jiala.

Wanhua Junior High School was founded on August 1, 1958, in the Jiala (加蚋仔) area of southern Wanhua — an old market-garden hamlet south of the walled Bangka settlement. Its 1968-built activity center, with distinctive A-shaped slanted columns and flying-buttress supports creating a wide unsupported span unusual for 1960s Taiwan, was designated a Taipei municipal historic building in December 2019. The six-lane Xizang Road running past the school's front gate was once an open drainage canal known as the "No. 3 Special Drainage Ditch" (特三號排水溝), covered over in the 1970s. Today the school enrolls roughly 1,900 students across its three grades.

🏛️ A Historic Activity Center

Built in 1968 with distinctive A-shaped slanted columns and flying-buttress supports, the school's activity center was designated a Taipei municipal historic building in December 2019 — a rare architectural landmark on a school campus.

🛣️ A Road That Was Once a Canal

The six-lane Xizang Road out front was originally an open drainage canal, covered over in the 1970s — a small but telling piece of Wanhua's urbanization history.

🌾 Rooted in Old Jiala

The school sits in Jiala, the historic market-garden hamlet south of the walled Bangka settlement, reflecting Wanhua's agrarian-turned-urban riverside history.

South of old Bangka, in the Jiala fields.

🌾

Wanhua Junior High sits in Jiala (加蚋仔), the old farming and market-garden hamlet that lay just south of the walled Bangka (艋舺) settlement, also known as Monga. While Jiala had its own agrarian identity, it always looked north toward Bangka's core — anchored by Longshan Temple (龍山寺) and the adjoining Herb Lane (青草巷) — for trade, worship, and community life, a relationship that still shapes how this end of Wanhua connects to the district's historic heart.
