It remains a small school — around 44 students and 14 teachers in recent statistics — serving the children of Waian Village, one of Penghu's most iconic traditional fishing communities.
外垵國小創立於民國36年（1947年）1月，民國45年（1956年）獨立設校，民國57年（1968年）定名為「外垵國民小學」。學校規模小巧，近年統計約有44名學生與14位教師，服務外垵村——澎湖最具代表性的傳統漁村之一——的學童。
