A century-old school reborn for a shrinking mountain community.
Changxing Elementary was founded in 1920 by the Japanese colonial government as a “番童教育所” (aboriginal children's education station). It was renamed 長興國民學校 after Taiwan's 1945 retrocession, became 桃園縣立長興國民小學 in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform, and took its current municipal name in 2014. The school began formally converting into a Taoyuan “school-type Indigenous experimental education” institution starting in the second semester of the 2023-24 academic year, completing the transition in 2024-25 — one of Taoyuan's first three such conversions, alongside Luofu and Guanghua. It is now extremely small — about 6 classes, 33 students, and 28 staff — and every student at the school is Atayal. It sits along the Roma Highway in a spur of the Xueshan mountain range, overlooking the upper Dahan River basin.

🏫 A Century-Old Colonial-Era Origin
Founded in 1920 by the Japanese colonial government as a “番童教育所” (aboriginal children's education station), the school carries over a century of history.
🔄 One of Taoyuan's First Experimental Conversions
Alongside Luofu and Guanghua, Changxing was one of Taoyuan's first three schools to formally convert to “school-type Indigenous experimental education” status, completing the transition in 2024-25.
👨👩👧 A 100% Atayal, 33-Student Campus
Every student at the school is Atayal, and with about 6 classes and just 33 students, the campus shows how small Fuxing's mountain schools have become amid rural depopulation.
A direct response to mountain depopulation.
Like Guanghua and Luofu, Changxing's recent shift to Indigenous-experimental status is a direct response to Fuxing's declining birthrate and rural depopulation — with a 100% Atayal, roughly 33-student student body, it shows just how small these mountain campuses have become. See the Taoyuan county page for more on the region.
