Renamed for luck, and a parent school in its own right.

Yong'an Elementary began in 1920, under Japanese rule, as a teaching branch of Dapo Public School at Kantoucuo (大坡公學校崁頭厝分教場), becoming independent as Kantoucuo Public School in 1929. After Taiwan's 1945 retrocession it was renamed Kantoucuo National School, then Yong'an National School in 1959 because the old name was considered inauspicious, and finally took its current name of Yong'an Elementary School in 1968. The school in turn spun off two branch schools of its own in the 1960s — Beihu (1960) and Bengang (1962) — both of which later became independent schools. Its old name "崁頭厝" shares the same root as "崁頭屋港," the historic name of nearby Yong'an Fishing Harbor.

⚓ Sharing a Name With the Harbor

🌱 A Parent School to Two Others

Yong'an Elementary spun off its own Beihu (1960) and Bengang (1962) branch campuses, both of which later became independent schools.

📛 A Renamed-for-Luck School

The school's 1959 renaming from "Kantoucuo" to "Yong'an" ("Peaceful and Secure") came because the old name was considered inauspicious.

Local Culture ·

Sharing its name with a Hakka fishing harbor.

Yong'an Elementary's lineage is directly tied to Yong'an Fishing Harbor — Taiwan's only Hakka-majority fishing harbor — sharing its pre-1959 place name with the harbor itself, and anchoring the school firmly in the district's coastal fishing heritage.
