Over a century of history, renamed for the reservoir.

Shimen Elementary was founded in 1918, during the Japanese colonial era, as "Sankengzi Public School" (三坑仔公學校), one of the oldest schools in the district. Its first principal was Hirota Yoshisaburo, a Japanese-era educator. The school was renamed several times through the colonial period — from 三坑仔 to 三坑子公學校 to 三坑子國民學校 — before taking its present name, Shimen (石門), in 1957. In December 1944, wartime military requisition of the school buildings forced classes to be split across three separate locations, running two shifts a day — a notable wartime survival story. The school celebrated its 100th anniversary school festival, attended by the Taoyuan mayor.

🏞️

The school's original name, "Sankengzi," ties it to the same Sankeng-area Hakka settlement history as neighboring Sankeng Elementary, and its later renaming to "Shimen" links it to the Shimen Reservoir and dam area that dominates western Longtan's geography. See the Taoyuan county page for more on the region.
