Taoyuan's most remote mini-school.

Guanghua Elementary began in February 1952 as a branch class of Sanguang Elementary (“三光國民學校光華分班”), was upgraded to full branch-campus status in August 1959, and became independent in August 1962 as “光華國民學校.” Deep in the Xueshan mountain range, this is reportedly the most remote mini-school in all of Taoyuan City: as of recent data, it has only 6 classes and about 13 students total, served by 24 staff. It sits at “Hakawan” (哈嘎灣), the Atayal place name for the area, and its student body is almost entirely Indigenous. In 2024-25, along with Luofu and Changxing elementary schools, it converted into one of Taoyuan's first Indigenous-focused “school-type experimental education” institutions (原住民族學校型態實驗教育學校) in response to severe rural depopulation.

A mini-school shaped by mountain geography.

⛰️

As Taoyuan's most remote mini-school, sitting at a site still known by its Atayal name Hakawan, Guanghua exemplifies both the deep mountain geography and the demographic pressures — severe depopulation, tiny class sizes — reshaping Fuxing's Indigenous schools today. See the Taoyuan county page for more on the region.
