The old East Gate of downtown Taoyuan.

Dongmen Elementary was founded March 28, 1934 as "桃園第二公學校" (Taoyuan Second Public School) under Japanese rule, with first principal Noguchi Eisaku. It was renamed "春日國民學校" in 1941, "桃園第一國民學校" in 1946, and "桃園鎮東門國民學校" in 1947; it became "桃園縣桃園市東門國民小學" in 1971 when the town was upgraded to a city, and finally its present name in 2014 when Taoyuan County became a special municipality. The school spun off a "會稽分校" in 1952 and a "大林分校" in 1957 — meaning three schools in this batch (Dongmen, Hui-Ji, and Jian-Guo) trace back to a single lineage. It celebrated its 90th anniversary around 2024–2025.

A living link to the old walled city.

🚪

Dongmen Elementary sits deep in the culturally rich educational district at the historic heart of downtown Taoyuan City, and its preserved Japanese-era dormitory building is a direct physical remnant of the colonial-period school system that shaped the district's original core. Its name, "東門" (East Gate), belongs to the same directional-gate naming series as 西門國小 (West Gate) — a permanent reminder of the old walled city's four cardinal gates. See the Taoyuan county page for more on the region.
