A century-old school named for an earthen fort.
Tucheng Elementary was established in April 1922, during the Japanese colonial era, as a branch station of Qishi'er Public School; it became fully independent in 1934 as "Tucheng Public School." Classes were initially held in private houses before a schoolhouse was built the same founding year, and the school was rebuilt at its current Chengdong Village site in 1940. Its first postwar principal, Chen Chun-fa, later also became the founding principal of nearby Chang'an Elementary School. The school took its present name, "Tainan City Annan District Tucheng Elementary School," in 1968.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🏘️ Named for an Earthen Fort
校名源自古土城聚落
"Tucheng" means earthen fortification — one of Annan's old Qing-era hamlet clusters, and the school predates the district's modern name by decades.
🏫 Classes First Held in Private Houses
創校初期借用民宅上課
Before a dedicated schoolhouse existed, the school's earliest classes were held in local residents' homes.
👤 A Shared Founding Principal
與長安國小同創校校長
The school's first postwar principal, Chen Chun-fa, went on to found nearby Chang'an Elementary School as well.
Older than the district's modern name.
Named for "Tucheng" (earthen fortification/walled settlement), one of Annan's old Qing-era hamlet clusters, the school is over a century old and predates the district's modern name, reflecting the deep agricultural-settlement history of the area around today's Sicao wetlands. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
