Where Chenggong's story began.

Zhongxiao Elementary was founded on October 12, 1904, under Japanese colonial rule as "Taitung Kokugo Denshūjo Chenggwang'ao Branch School," and has been renamed several times since. Its roots reach back to before the region's harbor was even built — the school stands in the historic Chenggwang'ao area, the original point of Han Chinese settlement in what later became Chenggong, dating to the 1860s and 1870s. Nearby once stood Guanghengfa, established in 1916 and once the largest general store on Taiwan's entire east coast.

Local Culture ·

Chenggwang'ao, before Chenggong.

Zhongxiao Elementary stands in Chenggwang'ao (成廣澳), the earliest Han Chinese settlement point in what became Chenggong, well before the 1932 completion of the Xingang fishing port made "Chenggong" the region's dominant fishing town. The school's century-plus history is a living record of that earlier chapter.
