Profile

The district's namesake school, with heritage roots.

Zhongshan Elementary School opened on April 1, 1934, as "Miyamae Public School" (宮前公學校) under Japanese rule. Part of its original Japanese-era campus buildings survive today and were designated a Taipei City historic building in 2019. After Taiwan's retrocession in 1945, it was renamed "Taipei Municipal Zhongshan National School," with the city government appointing Jiang Huolong as its first postwar principal.

The school has a long record of pioneering special education: it opened an early intellectual-disability support class in 1962 and a "gifted" (資優班) special class in 1973, among the earliest such programs in Taipei. The school and the district itself both take their name from Dr. Sun Yat-sen (中山), and the surviving Miyamae-era buildings are a direct physical link to Zhongshan District's identity as one of Taipei's earliest Japanese-era planned residential and commercial districts.
