The parent school of Dadaocheng.
Taiping Elementary was founded on October 1, 1898, during the Japanese colonial era, as Dadaocheng Public School (大稻埕公學校), inheriting the lineage of the 1896-established Taipei Mandarin Training Institute. It became parent school to several other Datong-area elementary schools: its female branch split off in 1911 to become today's Penglai Elementary, and a 1915 branch campus became today's Rixin Elementary. The school was renamed Taipei Yanping District Taiping National Elementary School in 1968, then Taipei Datong District Taiping National Elementary School in 1990 after Taipei's administrative-district reorganization. In 1968, funds donated by Taiping parents helped build the "Pingyue Overpass" (平樂陸橋), reportedly Taipei's first pedestrian overpass, which was preserved even as most of the city's other overpasses were later demolished.

The founding thread of Datong's schools.
As the direct institutional root of Dadaocheng-area schooling — parent to both Penglai and Rixin Elementary — Taiping Elementary's history is the founding thread of Datong's modern public education, tracking the district's rise as a tea-trading and residential hub from the late Qing era into the Japanese colonial period.
