Mingde Junior High was founded in 1968 under its first principal, Huang Zhong-xing. Its campus was designed by the noted architect Hsiu Tse-lan, whose distinctive modernist school buildings are found across Taiwan. The school's name — like sister schools Xinmin Junior High and Zhishan Junior High — is drawn from the opening line of the Confucian classic The Great Learning. Mingde celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017 with an alumni-focused event titled "明德武林，飛耀50" ("Mingde Wulin, Soaring 50").
明德國中創校於民國57年（1968年），首任校長為黃忠幸。校舍出自知名建築師修澤蘭之手，其現代主義風格的校園建築遍布台灣各地。校名與姊妹校新民國中、至善國中相同，皆取自《大學》開篇之義。民國106年（2017年）學校歡慶建校50週年，舉辦「明德武林，飛耀50」校友活動。
