Jiala's first school, now over a century old.
Dongyuan Elementary School opened in March 1912 as a branch campus of Daan Public School, serving the Jiala (加蚋) area of southern Wanhua. It became an independent school the following year under the name Jiala Public School (加蚋公學校), then was renamed Dongyuan Public School in 1922, Dongyuan National School in 1941, and finally took its current name, Dongyuan National Elementary School, in 1968. As the first school established in Jiala, Dongyuan anchors more than a century of education in what was once a farming and market-garden hamlet south of the walled Bangka settlement.

🌱 Over a Century in Jiala
逾百年的加蚋仔教育史
Now more than 100 years old, Dongyuan anchors the historic Jiala hamlet's identity, having outlasted the area's shift from farmland to dense urban neighborhood.
The old market-garden hamlet of Jiala.
As the founding school of Jiala (加蚋仔), historically a farming and market-garden hamlet south of the walled Bangka (艋舺) settlement, Dongyuan Elementary anchors that older agrarian identity within present-day Wanhua. Jiala families would have long looked north to Bangka's core — centered on Longshan Temple (龍山寺) and the traditional apothecaries of Herb Lane (青草巷) — for trade, healing, and worship, a relationship still woven into Wanhua's geography today.
