From a private academy to a public high school.
Datong Senior High School's predecessor was founded in 1935 as the private "Taipei Citizens' Middle School," established within the campus of the private Chengyuan Academy on today's Wuchang Street — a decade before Taiwan's 1945 retrocession from Japan. It later relocated to the former site of a provincial school for the blind and deaf in Dalongdong.
On November 10, 1945, shortly after retrocession, it was renamed "Private Datong Middle School." In 1958, overcrowding pushed the school to its current site on Changchun Road in Zhongshan District, and in 1992 it became a full senior high with an attached junior-high division. Today it sits a short walk from MRT Xingtian Temple Station, along the busy commercial corridor between Zhongshan and neighboring Songshan and Datong districts.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🏫 Roots in a Private Academy
The school began in 1935 inside the campus of the private Chengyuan Academy, a decade before Taiwan's retrocession — one of several Taipei schools with roots predating the postwar era.
🕊️ Renamed at Retrocession
Just weeks after Taiwan's 1945 retrocession from Japan, the school was renamed "Private Datong Middle School" on November 10, 1945 — a direct marker of that historical transition.
🏗️ A 1958 Move to Changchun Road
Overcrowding drove the school's relocation to its present Changchun Road campus in 1958, right as Zhongshan District's postwar residential and institutional buildout was accelerating.
🚇 A Doorstep MRT Station
The campus sits a short walk from MRT Xingtian Temple Station, at the heart of the dense commercial corridor linking Zhongshan District with neighboring Songshan and Datong.
Growing up with postwar Zhongshan.
The school's 1958 relocation to Changchun Road placed it squarely inside the postwar residential and institutional buildout of Zhongshan District, an area that grew rapidly as Taipei expanded northward from the old walled city. See the Taipei county page for more on the region.
