The school that named a district.
Datong Elementary opened in 1937, during the Japanese colonial era, as Enzan (Yuanshan) Public School (圓山公學校); it was renamed Yuanshan National School in 1941, then Datong National School in 1946 after WWII — and it is from this school and its surrounding area that Datong District itself takes its name. The school's original site is where Lanzhou Junior High now stands; it later moved and expanded to its current Dalong Street address. The campus is now slated for a major redevelopment: existing buildings are set to be demolished in summer 2026, with a new five-story building combining a social-welfare center, a teaching building, and an underground parking structure due to open around 2031, and part of the school will temporarily relocate to the Lanzhou Junior High campus during construction.

The origin of Datong's name.
The district of Datong is itself named after this school's area, and its campus history — from Yuanshan Public School under Japanese rule to Datong National School after WWII — traces the transition of Taipei's oldest urban district from the colonial era into the postwar period. Few schools anywhere in the city carry such a direct namesake relationship with the district around them.
