A school shaped by a river-straightening project.
Dajia Elementary School was founded in 1954 and relocated to its current site in 1968 due to flight-path restrictions affecting the Dajia area near Songshan Airport. The school's history took a dramatic turn in 1991, when the Keelung River-straightening project ("基隆河大佳段截彎取直") displaced many local households — enrollment plunged from roughly 600 students to just 42.
In response, the school opened itself as a citywide "large-district" school from the 1995 school year onward, gradually rebuilding its enrollment. It later made local news for parents camping overnight with tents and sleeping bags to secure enrollment slots — a striking sign of its subsequent popularity. Today the school sits directly beside Dajia Riverside Park, one of Taipei's major Keelung River-front recreational parks.

A record of the Keelung riverside's transformation.
A vivid illustration of Zhongshan District's Keelung River geography, the school's own enrollment history is a direct record of the 1991 river-straightening project that reshaped the Dajia and Dazhi riverside neighborhoods, and its site beside Dajia Riverside Park ties it permanently to the river.
