大湖國小創立於民國82年（1993年），並已正式獲指定為臺北市公立雙語教育國小之一，列名於113學年度雙語學校名冊。這項指定意義重大，學校的官方英文名稱中甚至直接標示「Bilingual School」。校名取自並緊鄰大湖公園——這座公園原為沼澤與魚塭，於民國68年（1979年）整治為景觀湖泊公園，曾獲法國《世界報》譽為全球最美公園之一。
