Tongxiao Elementary began in 1898 as a branch school under Japanese rule, becoming independent in 1902 — making it the town's founding, or "mother," school, which historically spun off Nanhe, Chengzhong, Wumei, Zhentou, and other Tongxiao-area schools. The school celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2022. Notable alumni include cartoonist Qiu Xixun, sculptor Ju Ming, and wood-carving artist Kang Muxiang.
通霄國小於1898年（明治31年）以分校形式創立，1902年（明治35年）獨立設校，是通霄地區的創校「母校」，歷史上曾分出南和、城中、烏眉、圳頭等多所通霄地區學校。學校於2022年（民國111年）舉辦建校120週年慶祝活動。知名校友包括漫畫家邱錫勳、雕塑家朱銘，以及木雕藝術家康木祥。
