Rising and falling with the tide of a fishing port.
Tongguang Elementary opened in 1918 during the Japanese colonial era as the "Houlong Public School Gongsiliao Branch," becoming an independent school in 1922. Located beside Longgang Fishing Harbor, the school reached its peak enrollment of 689 students in 1955, at the height of the Gongsiliao fishing port's activity. As the fishing port has declined over subsequent decades, the school has become much smaller, though it remains deeply tied to its coastal community.
