A branch of Nanzhou's educational family tree.
Tong'an Elementary School split off from Nanzhou Elementary School's original catchment area around 1958, as the older school's territory — once spanning eight villages — was divided to bring education closer to more of Nanzhou Township's farming communities. The school is recognized by the Pingtung County Education Department as a "concept/feature school" (理念特色學校), reflecting a distinct educational approach within the county's rural elementary system.

Like its neighboring schools, Tong'an Elementary serves families rooted in Nanzhou Township's agricultural economy.
Sugar-cane roots, watermelon present.
Nanzhou Township's economy has long revolved around sugar-cane cultivation and the historic Taisugar sugar refinery that once anchored the community (then known as Xizhou). Today, the fields around Tong'an Elementary are just as likely to be growing watermelon, one of the township's key modern crops. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
