A rural campus built for the arts.
National Tainan University of the Arts (TNNUA) began when the Executive Yuan approved its establishment in 1989, with a preparatory office set up in 1993. It formally opened in July 1996 as Tainan National College of the Arts, and was renamed Tainan National University of the Arts in August 2004. Alongside Taipei National University of the Arts, it is one of only a handful of universities in Taiwan dedicated specifically to the arts, and it was deliberately sited in a rural setting to give students a contemplative environment for creative work.
What makes this university worth knowing.
🎨 Specialized Arts Colleges
TNNUA's colleges span Letters and Cultural Heritage, Music, Sound and Image Arts, and Visual Arts, with 14 departments and graduate institutes covering music, visual arts, animation, film, architecture, design, and cultural heritage studies.
🎓 A Rare Doctoral Path in the Arts
TNNUA offers doctoral programs in interdisciplinary arts, cultural studies, and art theory — relatively rare offerings within Taiwan's arts-education landscape.
🌏 A Small, Boutique Campus
With roughly 1,700 students including international students, TNNUA is intentionally small in scale, allowing for close mentorship in specialized creative fields.
🎬 Field-Specific Reputation
TNNUA does not appear in general global rankings like QS or THE, reflecting its small, specialized scale — its reputation instead rests on its standing within Taiwan's fine arts, music, film, and conservation communities.
A campus beside a landmark reservoir.
TNNUA's rural campus sits near Wushantou Reservoir, the irrigation landmark built under Japanese engineer Hatta Yoichi that transformed the surrounding Chianan Plain — placing Taiwan's premier arts academy inside one of greater Tainan's most historically significant agricultural-engineering landscapes. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
