Zhongshan Junior High School was founded in September 1957 as the "Tainan Municipal Girls' Junior Middle School," built on the former site of the Japanese-era Tainan Prefectural Second Girls' High School. It took its current name in 1968 under Taiwan's new nine-year compulsory education system. The school added a gifted dance program in 1984 and an athletics program in 2012, and only began admitting male students in 2008, decades after its founding as a girls'-only institution. A new school building on the historic site is under construction as of the mid-2020s, part of a NT$108 million project reported in recent local news coverage.
中山國中創校於1957年（民國46年）9月，初名「臺南市立女子初級中學」，校址為日治時期臺南州立臺南第二高等女學校舊址。1968年因應九年國民義務教育改制為現名。1984年成立舞蹈資優班，2012年增設體育班，並於2008年才開始招收男學生，距創校已逾半世紀。截至2025-2026年，校方在此歷史校地上進行新校舍興建工程，總經費約新台幣1.08億元，為近期地方新聞報導的重點工程。
