Xinguang Elementary School began life in 1947 as a branch class of Guanmiao Elementary School known as the "Gongli branch," became a full branch school in 1958, and gained full independence as Xinguang National School in 1966. Since independence, the school has had a long, well-documented succession of ten-plus principals, reflecting a stable multi-decade institutional history despite its small-town setting.
新光國小前身為民國36年（1947年）設立的關廟國小「公埔分班」，於民國47年（1958年）升格為分校，並於民國55年（1966年）獨立設校，命名為新光國民學校。獨立設校以來，歷經十餘任校長，校史文獻記錄完整，展現這所小型鄉間學校歷經數十年仍保持穩定發展的軌跡。
