⚓ A Name That Recalls a River Port
河港地名的見證
Gangdong village's name — "river-port east" — recalls Xigang's historic role as a river port on the Zengwen River system before siltation reduced its navigability.
🌾 Serving a Rural Farming Village
服務鄉村聚落
As with most Xigang schools, Gangdong Elementary serves a small farming community shaped by the district's agricultural and river-port history.
Xigang, home of the triennial King Boat Festival.
Gangdong village's name recalls Xigang's historic role as a river port on the Zengwen River system, before silting reduced its navigability — a reminder that the district's farming interior was once tied together by river trade as much as by roads. Xigang today is best known for its triennial Xigang Wangye's Boat Festival (西港刈香/王船祭), centered on Qing'an Temple (慶安宮). See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
