Dazhu Elementary began as a branch campus of Yufeng Elementary School, renamed "Yufeng School Dazhu Branch" in August 1959, before becoming an independent school in August 1964. It sits within the Jianan Plain irrigation district (嘉南大圳灌區), a classic rural farming-village setting. Since around 1998, local farmers in the area have shifted heavily into lotus-flower cultivation and lotus-related agritourism and homestays, benefiting in recent years from the boost the annual Baihe Lotus Festival brings to the local economy.
大竹國小原為玉豐國小分校，民國48年（1959年）8月更名為「玉豐國小大竹分校」，民國53年（1964年）8月獨立設校。校址位於嘉南大圳灌區內，是典型的農村學校。自民國87年（1998年）左右起，當地農民大量轉作蓮花種植，發展蓮花相關農業旅遊與民宿，近年更受惠於白河蓮花節帶動的地方經濟。
