A school named for a mountain that isn't there.
Dashan Elementary School began in 1919 as a satellite classroom of Madou Public School and became independent in 1921 as "Dashanjiao Public School." The place name "Dashan" ("big mountain") comes from a sand dune that emerged from a geological shift on the school's southwest side long ago — the village at its foot was named "Dashanjiao" ("foot of the big mountain") accordingly. The school sits at the intersection of the Nan-49 township road and Provincial Highway 171, on Madou's western edge toward Haipu Village, and hosts Tainan's first public elementary-school-based public childcare facility ("大山公共托育家園"), combining school grounds with a municipal childcare service.
