Tainan's first municipal junior high school.
Founded in September 1946 as "Tainan Municipal Junior High School," Dacheng was the first municipal junior high school established in Tainan City, and was renamed Dacheng Junior High in 1968 as part of Taiwan's nine-year compulsory education reform. Its first campus stood on the former outer garden of the Tainan Shinto Shrine; in 1953 the school swapped land with Fengjia National School — today's Zhongyi Elementary — to reach its current site. Dacheng also has a notable institutional legacy: its 1956 branch campus later became independent as Yanping Junior High School in North District, and a separate 1960 branch grew into today's Nanning Senior High School. From 1994 to 1998 the school ran a competitive youth baseball team that, despite lasting only four years, produced nine professional players, including Tsai Ying-feng and Cheng Nai-wen.

From shrine grounds to the heart of civic Tainan.
As Tainan's first municipal junior high, founded right after WWII on land once tied to the former Japanese-era Shinto shrine grounds, Dacheng anchors the long civic-institution history that runs through South and West-Central Tainan, a thread that connects the city's colonial-era urban planning to its postwar public school system.
