Rebuilt from ruin into a landmark of Bunun identity.

Tannan Elementary School began in 1951 as a branch of Dili Elementary School, becoming independent in 1958 and taking its current name in 1968. The school's history took a dramatic turn when the 1999 921 earthquake completely destroyed its original campus. In the rebuilding that followed in 2000, funded by the Hao Ran Foundation, architects chose not to erect an ordinary school building — instead, they designed the new campus in the form of a traditional Bunun slate stone house, complete with Bunun totems, slate walls, and street-art murals. The reconstruction won the 3rd Far Eastern Architectural Award's "Special Award for Campus Reconstruction," transforming a moment of disaster into a lasting architectural celebration of Bunun heritage.
