Pingtung's first modern school.
Tangrong Elementary's history stretches back to 1896, when a language school opened beside the Mazu Temple in what is now central Pingtung City — making it, by most accounts, the site of Pingtung's very first modern school. The institution was renamed repeatedly through the Japanese colonial era: Akou Public School in 1899, Aho Public School in 1914, Pingtung Public School in 1921 under its first principal Hirata Chushiro, and "Heijin National School" in 1941. After the original school building was destroyed by wartime bombing, its students and registration were merged into a separate Japanese-era school, which was later renamed Tangrong Elementary — the name the school carries today, with more than 100 years of continuous educational history on essentially the same historic site.
