Profile

Rebuilt as the world's most beautiful elementary school.

Taiwu Elementary School was formally established in 1968 at its original mountainside campus, merging with the Jiaxing branch school; its history traces back further to an earlier Japanese-era school presence in the mountains. The school is home to the internationally touring Taiwu Elementary Ancient Ballads Choir (泰武古謠傳唱), formed in 2004 by five students under teacher Chalaw Chamak and formally established as a troupe in 2006. The choir has released multiple albums, been nominated for and won Golden Melody Awards for Best Indigenous Language Album, and performed internationally to widespread acclaim, including praise from an Australian arts curator. The school's original campus was devastated by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and relocated in stages — first to Jiaping Village, then Taiwu Junior High, then Jiaxing Village — before rebuilding permanently at the base of the mountain in the new Kucapungane/Wulaljuc (吾拉魯滋) permanent-housing settlement, completed in August 2011. It was the first school campus in Taiwan fully rebuilt after the Morakot disaster, constructed with support from the BenQ/AU Optronics Cultural and Educational Foundation. It became Pingtung's first school with a fully solar-panel roof, and Japanese civil engineering scholars praised it as “the world's most beautiful elementary school.” The campus deeply integrates Paiwan culture: an attached kindergarten built in traditional slate-house style, corridors decorated with hundred-pace-snake motifs, pottery and sun-themed artwork, and the three sacred Paiwan colors — yellow, green, and red — symbolizing respect, harmony, and blessing. Historically the school has been very small, with around 60-plus students, reflecting its remote mountain location closest to the Paiwan sacred peak, Dawu Mountain.

🎵

Taiwu Township is a Paiwan indigenous mountain township where Paiwan make up about 94% of the population, centered on the sacred Dawu Mountain (北大武山); traditional life is built around millet farming and slate-house (石板屋) architecture. The township is internationally known through the Taiwu Elementary Ancient Ballads Choir — a major source of local pride — and its rebuilt campus in the Wulaljuc permanent-housing settlement stands as a living monument to Paiwan resilience after Typhoon Morakot, blending post-disaster reconstruction with deeply rooted cultural design.
