Central and southern Taiwan's first middle school.
National Tainan Second Senior High School — known locally as "Nan-er-zhong" (南二中) — was founded on May 11, 1914, under Japanese rule as "Taiwan Governor-General's Tainan Middle School," the second public middle school established in Taiwan and the first in central or southern Taiwan. It was renamed several times over the following decades: Tainan Prefecture's Tainan First Middle School in 1922, Taiwan Provincial Tainan Second Middle School after the 1945 handover to the Republic of China government — a date the school now celebrates as its founding anniversary, December 8 — Taiwan Provincial Tainan Second Senior High School in 1961, and finally National Tainan Second Senior High School in 2000. Originally established mainly to educate Japanese settler youth during the colonial period, it is today, alongside Tainan First Senior High ("南一中"), one of the two oldest and most prestigious public boys' senior high schools in Tainan.

Renamed five times across more than a century, from a Japanese colonial middle school to today's national senior high, the school's name changes trace the arc of modern Taiwanese history itself.
At the historic core of old Tainan.
As one of Tainan's oldest secondary schools, Nan-er-zhong's North District campus sits near the historic core of the old walled city, in an area shaped by the temple- and railway-era development that gave North District its distinct identity through the Japanese colonial and postwar periods alike.
