Over a century serving Taiwan's Atayal heartland.
Taian Junior High and Elementary School traces its origins to 1907, during the Japanese colonial era, when it opened as the "Takao-Kumotoge Indigenous Education Institute." In 1997, the elementary school merged with Taian Junior High to form today's combined K-9 institution, and the school was officially designated an Indigenous-focused school in 1998. With over 115 years of history but only roughly 43 to 47 total students, it remains a very small school at the heart of Taian Township, whose population is roughly two-thirds Atayal indigenous people — Taiwan's only fully mountainous Atayal indigenous township.
