The mother school of Liujiao Township.
Suantou Elementary School was approved for founding on February 24, 1911, with classes beginning on April 15, 1911, at Yong'an Temple, with 139 male and 8 female students — one of the earliest schools established in the area during the Japanese colonial era, originally named "Suantou Public School." The original school building was damaged by a typhoon in 1912, requiring temporary relocation, and a senior/upper division was added in 1936, with a reinforced-concrete school building completed the same year. Renamed several times after the war, the school adopted its current name in 1968 under Taiwan's nine-year compulsory education reform, and has continuously operated for over a century as "the earliest-established and most populous elementary school in Liujiao Township," having served as the "mother school" that spawned numerous branch schools across the township, including what became Liumei, Liujiao, and Wannei elementary schools.

The historic hub of Liujiao Township.
Suantou ("garlic head") village was historically the commercial and administrative hub of Liujiao Township, tied to the region's sugar-cane processing at the nearby Suantou Sugar Refinery and rice/vegetable farming economy; the school's century-long role as the "mother school" of the township mirrors Suantou's central place in local agricultural life. See the Chiayi county page for more on the region.
