From an engineering junior college to a science and technology university.
Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST) was founded in 1969 as Nan-Tai Junior College of Engineering, established by local political consultant San-lian Wu together with academics Wen-Ping Hsin, Xiu-qi Wu, and Li-tang Chang, in response to a government push for private institutions to train industrial and business talent. It expanded into Nan-Tai Junior College of Engineering and Business in 1990, was upgraded to Nan-Tai Institute of Technology in 1996, and became Southern Taiwan University of Technology in 1999, adding graduate schools in 2000 and doctoral programs in 2002. It was renamed Southern Taiwan University in 2007, and took its current name in 2012.

A campus that grew with Yongkang.
STUST's growth from a 1969 engineering junior college into a full science-and-technology university tracks the postwar industrialization of Yongkang — a district that grew from a rural periphery into one of greater Tainan's dense manufacturing and residential suburbs. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
