A farm school that grew with the city around it.
Songshan Vocational High School of Agriculture and Industry was founded in February 1949 as the "Taipei Municipal Junior Agricultural School," taking over land that had belonged to the Japanese-era Taihoku Prefectural Fourth Middle School. Construction broke ground on May 3, 1949 — a date the school still celebrates as its anniversary. It was renamed "Taipei Municipal Agricultural Vocational School" in 1955 after adding senior-level programs, split off its junior-high division in 1968 (which became today's Heping Junior High School), and took its present name in 1981.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🌱 A Working Farm in the Financial District
The school's Horticulture Department still operates a separate working farm on Wuxing Street inside Xinyi District — a rare surviving agricultural site amid Taipei's dense financial and government core.
The campus was established in 1949 on land formerly used by the Japanese-era Taihoku Prefectural Fourth Middle School, with construction breaking ground on May 3 — still marked as the school's anniversary.
🔀 A Split That Created Another School
When nine-year compulsory education began in 1968, the school's junior-high division split off to become Heping Junior High School, while the senior agricultural division moved to its current site.
🚜 Decades of Agricultural Education
Renamed several times as it grew, the school reached its current name, "Songshan Vocational High School of Agriculture and Industry," in 1981, reflecting its dual agricultural and industrial mission.
Farmland surviving inside a financial district.
The school's farm on Wuxing Street is one of the last working agricultural plots inside Xinyi District, a striking contrast with the district's transformation into Taipei's financial and government center around Taipei 101. Where Xinyi is now known worldwide for skyscrapers and shopping malls, this small horticultural plot is a living reminder that the area was farmland and hillside villages before postwar and 1990s urban redevelopment. See the Taipei city page for more on the region.
