From "Horie" canal town to a protected Health Building.

Shuangyuan Elementary School was founded on April 1, 1936, as Horie Public School (臺北堀江公學校), named for the canal and waterway area of Wanhua's low-lying riverside district that the Japanese called "Horie" (堀江). It was renamed Horie National School in 1941, then Taipei City Shuangyuan District Shuangyuan National School after Taiwan's 1945 retrocession, and finally Shuangyuan National Elementary School in 1968. The school opened a special-education class for students with intellectual disabilities in 1965, an early example of such programming in the district. Its Japanese-era "Health Building" (健康樓) was designated a Taipei municipal historic building in October 2019, preserving a physical link to the school's colonial-era origins.

💧

Shuangyuan Elementary's original Japanese name, Horie (堀江), referred to the canal and waterway area of Wanhua's low-lying riverside district — a direct link to the area's old water-trade geography, born from the same riverside commerce that built Bangka (艋舺), also known as Monga. Bangka's historic core, centered on Longshan Temple (龍山寺) and the adjoining Herb Lane (青草巷), remains the spiritual and commercial heart that this old canal district once helped supply.
