Shihzih Elementary was founded around 1957 and sits next to the historic Shihzih Road (十字路) station on the Alishan Forest Railway. The school describes itself as "the most beautiful mountain-forest school" (最美的山林學校), maintaining a campus flora website and a strong environmental-education focus.
