Rebuilt from disaster into a Hakka-style landmark.
Shitan Junior High opened in 1966 as a branch of Dahu Junior High and became fully independent in 1968. It originally drew students from five townships, including Shitan, Dahu, and Gongguan. The 9/21 earthquake of 1999 destroyed two of its teaching buildings, and the campus was rebuilt in Hakka architectural style, completed in 2003. Over more than 40 years, the school has produced roughly 5,000 graduates, though it is now a "mini school" with only three classes.

🏫 A Present-Day Mini School
Today the school operates with just three classes, a small-scale, close-knit setting typical of Miaoli's rural hill townships.
Built in the image of Hakka Shitan.
The campus's post-earthquake reconstruction deliberately used Hakka architectural elements, anchoring the school visually and culturally to Shitan's Hakka hill-farming heritage. See the Miaoli county page for more on the region.
