From bamboo-and-thatch schoolhouse to modern campus.
Shepi Elementary School was founded on April 27, 1910, during the Japanese colonial era, as a branch of Akou Public School (阿猴公學校社皮分校), initially a four-year school. It became a full six-year school and gained independence as “Shepi Public School” in 1915. After Taiwan's 1945 retrocession, it was renamed Shepi National School under its first post-war principal, Wu Tianhua, and became Pingtung County Wandan Township Shepi Elementary School in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform. Its earliest buildings were simple bamboo-and-thatch construction, gradually rebuilt in brick and tile from 1924 onward, with the campus reconstructed multiple times since — including an activity center, administration building, multi-purpose court, front courtyard, and the “Huayu Building.” With over 111 years of history, Shepi is among the older schools in the Wandan area.

Wandan, land of lotus and red beans.
Shepi Elementary sits in Shekou Village, within Wandan Township — Pingtung's most populous rural township, well known for its lotus-root and lotus-seed farming across flat, water-rich agricultural land. Just as the school itself has been rebuilt and renewed across generations, the surrounding farmland continues its own seasonal cycles of planting and harvest.
