A school built by, and for, the sugar refinery.
Shantang Elementary School was founded in 1947 as “the Taiwan Sugar Corporation Wanli Refinery Employees' Children's School” (臺灣糖業公司灣裡糖廠員工子弟學校), an unusual origin among Tainan's public elementary schools even today. It took its present name, Shantang Elementary School, in 1968. Built in Minnan-style architecture directly adjacent to the historic Shanhua Sugar Refinery and today's Shantang Cultural Park, the campus features a large slide and sand pit shaped by that industrial-town setting.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🏭 Born From the Refinery Workforce
源自台糖員工子弟學校
The school began life in 1947 as a company school for the children of Taiwan Sugar Corporation's Wanli refinery workers, unusual among Tainan public elementary schools.
🍬 A Curriculum Built Around Sugar
課程三大主軸:糖史、糖廠建築、童年記憶
Its school-based curriculum is organized entirely around “sugar”: the history of sugarcane refining, the architectural heritage of the refinery buildings, and childhood memories of sweets.
🏘️ Next Door to the Historic Refinery
緊鄰善化糖廠文化園區
Built in Minnan-style architecture beside the Shanhua Sugar Refinery and Shantang Cultural Park, the campus includes a large slide and sand pit reflecting its industrial-town setting.
The most literal expression of Shanhua's sugar heritage.
Of all the schools in this district, Shantang Elementary is the most literal embodiment of Shanhua's sugar-refinery heritage — a school born out of the refinery workforce itself, sitting next door to the historic Shanhua Sugar Refinery, and still teaching sugarcane history as its core curriculum today. See the Tainan county page for more on the region.
