Shanshang Junior High School was established in August 1968, part of the nationwide rollout of nine-year compulsory education. It is the only junior high school in Shanshang District, a small, hilly farming district southeast of Xinshi, and sits a short distance from the Tainan Shanshang Garden Waterworks Museum (臺南山上花園水道博物館), a national-monument former water-purification plant.
山上國中創立於民國57年（1968年）8月，為九年國教全面實施下設立的學校。作為山上區唯一的國中，服務範圍涵蓋這個位於新市東南方、丘陵地形為主的農業小區，校址距離國定古蹟「臺南山上花園水道博物館」（前身為淨水場）不遠。
